About this book

Language: French

The twelfth volume of the Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière, published in 1764, deals again with a series of various exotic quadrupeds, from the zebra to the porcupine, passing through all kinds of gazelles and other animals less well known to the public, and even completely new ones, such as the "urson" or the "tendrac". As in the previous volumes, Buffon sets out the "story" of each animal, occasionally devoting himself to general reflections, while Daubenton takes care of the anatomical description and the catalogue of the corresponding objects kept in the Royal Cabinet. The volume opens with the “First View of Nature”, a curious text, a piece of literary bravery, perhaps intended to satisfy a non-scholarly public a little tired of zoological monographs. Buffon deploys his most brilliant style there to paint a general picture of the universe, leaving the reader free to interpret his thought in a providentialist sense, while reaffirming without concession his main ideas on nature and science.
