About this book

Language: French

The thirteenth volume of the Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière, the tenth in the series devoted to quadrupeds, appeared in 1765. Like the previous one, it opens with a remarkable summary text, the second "View of Nature", in which Buffon recapitulates in a brilliant style some of his main scientific ideas, in particular on the notions of species and balance of nature, while introducing some audacious innovations, for example on the subject of the origin of chemical affinities.

The rest of the volume, abundantly illustrated, deals with various animal species, mainly exotic, often poorly known in the 18th century (giraffe, llama), even completely new, to the point that Buffon is forced to introduce several neologisms to name them, such as the "tarsier", the "coquallin" or the "ocelot". The volume ends with a long chapter on aquatic animals (seals, manatees, etc.), which, according to Buffon, form a kind of link between quadrupeds and cetaceans, contradicting the arbitrary classifications of systematists.
