About this book

Language: French

This fifteenth volume of the Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière, originally published in 1767, is the last of the first series of this work and it marks the end of the study of quadrupeds. Buffon and Daubenton complete their review of ape species: it is now the turn of the American forms to be described and illustrated. Again, several neologisms, such as "marmoset", are introduced.

This part on monkeys is followed by two chapters in which Buffon and Daubenton present species or objects that they were unable to deal with earlier. In particular, there is a description of an astonishing mummy recently discovered in Auvergne, as well as the skeleton of Baby, the dwarf by Stanislas Leszczynski who died in 1764. A voluminous table of contents, intended to be read as an abridgement of the work, closes the volume.
