About this book

Despite their vital role in soil ecology, the Myxomycetes go largely unnoticed by field naturalists, due partly to their small size and unpredictable occurrence, but perhaps also due to their absence from, or token appearance in, "popular" field guides. It is hoped that this brief catalogue will serve to stimulate interest in the group and encourage more active recording in the future. The present treatment follows that of Leontyev (2019), in dividing the Myxomycetes into eight orders, seven of which are represented in the Forest of Dean, in the western part of Gloucestershire, England. Genera and species are listed in alphabetical order within families. In general, the substrates and phenology are those recorded from the Dean and may therefore differ from observations recorded elsewhere.
