About this book

Language: English

The geographical location of Greece, in southeastern Europe and at the crossroad of three continents, its climate and intense relief have all contributed to its rich birdlife. The country also comprises a meeting point for birds of Europe, Asia and Africa, and the distribution limit for many species which do not occur in Europe. Additionally, it also serves as bottleneck for passage migrants on their way from and to the south. So far, 449 species of birds have been recorded in Greece, a number expected to increase, as more people become involved in birdwatching.

Birding in Greece, designed to be useful for birdwatchers, as well as bird photographers and naturalists, contains all the information needed to see some of the most important birds of Greece. It includes 33 of the most interesting birdwatching sites, covering all aspects of the exceptional habitat diversity found in the country; from alpine grasslands to river deltas and from maquis scrub to dense pristine woodland. Priority has been given to sites that hold populations of Mediterranean or rare and endangered species. The sites have been grouped in seven different regions, depending on their geographical location.

Each site comes with a detailed text and map with birding hotspots. It also includes information on how to get to each site, which is the best time of year to visit, other fauna and flora present as well as a list of the highlight bird species. Useful contacts are also provided.

The aim of Birding in Greece is to help birdwatchers add new species to their bird lists, to become familiar with the bird diversity in Greece and also to enjoy Greek nature, with the respect it deserves.
