About this book

Language: German

The author has been collecting data on the Tasmanian wolf for 30 years. He photographed and measured specimens, skulls and skeletons in around 30 museums in Europe, Australia and the USA and contributed to knowledge about the species in several publications. In the archives of Launceston and Hobart/Tasmania, he examined the partly unpublished image and text material and interviewed the last eyewitnesses; he owes some valuable information to scientists and amateur zoologists. A film document from Hobart was made into an educational film in collaboration with the Göttinger Institut für den Wissenschaftlichen Film (IWF, the Göttingen Institute for Scientific Film).

A significant amount of space is devoted to the Tasmanian wolf as a zoo animal and to the questions of the extent to which it can be considered a "typical runner" and the extent to which the skull shape of the Tasmanian wolf and the wolf have converged. This monograph is based on the data, image and film material collected and on more than 300 publications.
