About this book

Language: German

What does the common house martin (Mehlschwalbe in German) to do with flour (Mehl in German), what do warblers have in common with insects, and what does the name Hoopoe (Wiedehopf in German) mean if this bird does not hop, but moves in walking fashion? The author of this book provides the answers to such questions. Examining 440 European bird species, he explains the wording of their German and scientific names as well as their meaning and origin. It is also shown that some "obvious" interpretation of a name can be wrong. In addition, the work provides linguistic and historical backgrounds for the naming of birds, as well as the occurrence and way of life of the birds. 195 colour photos support the relationship between the bird's name and its bearer. In addition – for the first time in the German language area – a complete list of the naming authorities with brief information about the person is included.
