Out of a total of 3500 species found in the world, the family Araceae is represented by 25 genera and 187 taxa in India with the greatest concentration found in the Western Ghats, Eastern Himalaya and North Eastern states. The genus Arisaema, the species of which are commonly known as cobra-lilies (named as the spathe resembles the hood of the cobra), is the largest genus among the Indian Araceae, exhibiting a wide range of diversity in shape, colour and ornamentation of the spathe and also exhibits s high level of endemism in the country.
Volume 29 deals with a taxonomic revision of the family Araceae in India. For all taxa, the following information is given: updated nomenclature citation, typification of names (wherever required), detailed description, phenology, distribution, use, vernacular names, list of specimens examined, taxonomic or nomenclatural notes and bibliographic references. The fascicle is supplemented with 87 illustrations depicting the habitat, flower morphology, and 33 colour photo-plates showcasing the diversity of aroids in India.
