"More than 60 years have elapsed since Albert Pilat first monographed the known European species of Crepidotus. Since that time several researchers, among them L. R. Hesler, Alexander Smith, Rolf Singer, Stein Nordstein, and Béatrice Senn-Irlet have undertaken the task of refining species and generic concepts of the temperate North American and European species of this oft-overlooked but ubiquitous genus of pleurotoid agarics. A great deal of new information, especially that derived from DNA phylogenetic analyses and the application of mating studies, has been published on Crepidotus and the Crepidotaceae in the past decade which has yet made its way into an updated monographic treatment. This information along with new taxonomic novelties and new species descriptions has been widely scattered in the literature. It is with this need in mind that Giovanni Consiglio and Ledo Setti fill an important gap in the Agaricales literature.

This volume presents a synthesis of all studies on the identification, classification, and phylogeny of European species of Crepidotus. The authors consult extensively from both historical and modern sources, including relevant works on other members of the Crepidotaceae and from other world regions, to provide the most comprehensive introduction to the genus to date. Roughly one-half of the volume consists of an introductory portion that includes a brief history of the genus, methods, a glossary, detailed discussion of macro- and micromorphology of Crepidotus, ecology, and a taxonomic discussion of Crepidotus and the Crepidotaceae including comparison of previously proposed classification schemes and keys to and descriptions of the subgeneric sections. The second half of this work deals with keys to and descriptions of all species of Crepidotus reported from Europe. This portion is extremely valuable, pulling together previously published material with new type studies, distribution records, and the authors' own observations to provide the most up-to-date taxonomic and descriptive text yet for some 25 species.[...]"
