This work provides a foundation Western Palearctic members of the minute brown scavenger beetles of the family Latridiidae and the beetles of the family Merophysiidae that mostly live in the company of ants. The book provides a comprehensive overview of biology, systematics, etymology, nutrition, number of species, distribution, collection methods and preparation techniques.

Male reproductive organs (the aedeagus) of all species are depicted, togethe with many details in halftones, as a line drawing, colour drawing or as a photo. For most species of Latridiidae and Merophysiidae detailed images of the habitus and aedeagus are published here for the first time ever. All species are presented with full valid names, all synonyms and, if possible, the repository of holotypes, paratypes and lectotypes, a short diagnosis with a brief description. In addition, some Latridiidae and Merophysiidae from peripheral areas of the Western Palearctic are also presented as faunal-foreign species.

Although today the Merophysiidae are assigned to the subfamilies Merophysiinae and Holoparamecinae of the Endomychidae, the author has deliberately chosen "Latridiidae and Merophysiidae" as the book title. Both subfamilies have been referred to by the family name "Merophysiidae" for over 60 years and are thus far more familiar by this name, than according to their modern classification in the family Endomychidae.

The second edition is completely revised, incorporating taxonomic changes which have taken place over the last two years, up to October 2020. Appendices contain new descriptions. A total of 287 species are described and illustrated.

Dieses Grundlagenwerk über die Moderkäfer Latridiidae und den meistens in Gesellschaft von Ameisen lebenden Merophysiidae der West-Paläarktis, gibt auf breiter Basis einen umfassenden Überblick über Biologie, Systematik, Etymologie, Ernährung, Anzahl der Arten, Verbreitung, Sammelmethoden und Präparationstechniken.

Alle Arten sind mit Aedoeagus und vielen Details in Halbtontechnik, als Strichzeichnung, Farbzeichnung oder als Foto abgebildet. Von den meisten Arten der Latridiidae und Merophysiidae werden hier überhaupt erstmals detaillierte Abbildungen von Habitus und Aedoeagus veröffentlicht. Alle Arten werden mit vollem gültigen Namen, allen Synonymen und wenn möglich, dem Aufbewahrungsort der Holotypen, Paratypen und Lectotypen, einer kurzen Diagnose mit Kurzbeschreibung vorgestellt. Zusätzlich werden als faunenfremde Arten einige Latridiidae und Merophysiidae aus Randgebieten der West-Paläarktis mit vorgestellt und abgebildet.

Obwohl heute die Merophysiidae als Unterfamilien Merophysiinae und Holoparamecinae den Endomychidae zugeordnet werden, wurde bewusst „Latridiidae und Merophysiidae“ als Buchtitel gewählt. Beide Unterfamilien werden unter dem Familiennamen „Merophysiidae“ seit über 60 Jahren so verwendet und sind somit weitaus vertrauter als mit der heutigen Klassifizierung in der Familie Endomychidae.
