This book contains the proceedings of a workshop held at Bangor, Wales, from the 3-6th September 1997, on the subject of lichen habitat mangement. Although many nature reserves mention having lichen communities, there is no good literature available dealing with the ecological management of lichens. General advice is available through a network of specialists, coordinated by the British Lichen Society, who are increasingly being approached for advice on habitat management. However, letters sent out so often repeat the same advice that there was felt to be a need to co-ordinate information, make it consistent and eliminate duplicated effort. Up to now, there has been no consensus on how to manage lichen-rich habitats, therefore the danger of offering conflicting advice is and increasing possibility. There is also a perceived need to consider potential conflicts between management for lichen interest and that of other organisms in a site.
