Long-admired but poorly understood – and therefore little represented in collections – nearly any one of the 40+ species that make up the Mitrophyllum Group could be a star. Monilarias are exemplary of the family for forming two types of leaves: a round resting pair, and one active pair of leaves like bubbly noodles. And they are thirsty plants, taking water twice a week all winter long. Mitrophyllums, named for their mitre-like leaves, range from robust shrubs, to hanging basket subjects, to stout fatties that win plant shows. And a whole new genus awaits description in this group.
