About this book

Language: French

Swathes of scientific heritage preserved today in public institutions are experiencing transformations, transfer or restructuring. Though these processes seem to impose themselves, this "urgent" need for transformation is not neutral. Within these changes to the conditions of collections, arrangement imperatives, and systems of classification, lies the threat of disorder and loss. A museum conserves, but it can also destroy. Although the collections make sense historically through the collection, its context and its display, this dimension of time is erased between the object and its documentation. Scientific implications of these changes are highlighted here across different fields - botany, paleontology, prehistory, archeology, anthropology, ethnology. The authors try to reconstruct the systems of arrangement, records and classification that have made and unmade scientific collections. The interdisciplinary angle shows the complexity of the history of collections, and thus strongly reaffirms the importance and the conservation issues of scientific heritage - part of the heritage of humanity.
