The renowned Czech painter and book illustrator Zdeněk Michael František Burian (1905-1981) is considered one of the most influential palaeoartists of all time and is best known internationally for his paintings of dinosaurs, extinct mammals and prehistoric man.

The second volume of the prehistoric trilogy of Burian's palaeoart is devoted to the development of life on Earth from the end of the Mesozoic to the present (interglacial) period, i.e. the Tertiary and Quaternary periods, the so-called era of mammals. The final part of the book is devoted to the development of primates and human ancestors in these periods and is introduced by a chapter by Associate Professor Václav Vančata, who summarizes the latest findings on this topic. The book, like the first volume, offers newly photographed and scanned oil paintings of bizarre Tertiary mammals and birds, Quaternary mammoths, cave bears and lions, or even australopithecines. However, we also find here lesser-known gouache illustrations and line drawings of Josef Augusta's short stories, which have never been published in Czech, as well as dozens of completely unknown painter's preparatory sketches. It was possible to obtain photographs of the paintings, which are now in natural history museums in Vienna, Salzburg, Regensburg, Frankfurt, and Tripoli. Everything is accompanied by texts that place the painter's work in a wider paleontological and artistic context.

This volume is 250 × 337 mm in size and weighs close to 4 kg. The text is in Czech and the publisher has confirmed that there are no plans to translate this into English.

Druhý svazek pravěké trilogie se věnuje té části paleoartu Zdeňka Buriana, ve které se malíř se svými odbornými poradci zabýval vývojem života na Zemi od konce druhohor do současné doby (meziledové), tedy třetihorám a čtvrtohorám, tzv. éře savců. Závěrečná část knihy se věnuje vývoji primátů a předků člověka v těchto obdobích a je uvedena kapitolou docenta Václava Vančaty, jenž shrnuje nejsoučasnější poznatky na toto téma. Kniha, podobně jako první svazek, nabízí nově nasnímané a naskenované olejomalby bizarních třetihorních savců a ptáků, čtvrtohorních mamutů, jeskynních medvědů a lvů, či třeba australopitéků. Najdeme zde však i méně známé kvašové ilustrace a perokresby k povídkám Josefa Augusty, které v češtině nikdy nevyšly, a též desítky zcela neznámých malířových přípravných skic. Podařilo se získat fotografie obrazů, které se dnes nacházejí v přírodovědných muzeích ve Vídni, Salcburku, Regensburgu, Frankfurtu či třeba v libyjském Tripolisu. Vše doprovázejí texty, které uvádějí malířovo dílo do širšího paleontologického a uměleckého kontextu.
