The Forestry Commission was founded in 1919, primarily to rebuild the national timber stock, which had been severely depleted during the First World War.
The Forestry Commission’s publications include many on forest management and woodland conservation, including Silviculture and Management of Coppice Woodlands, Managing Deadwood in Forests and Woodlands, and Ecology and Conservation of Raptors in Forests.
Forestry Commission Technical Papers include Genetic Variation and Conservation of British Native Trees and Shrubs, and Grazing as a Management Tool in European Forest Ecosystems, while many of its Bulletins are on conservation topics.
Much of the Forestry Commission’s work is now geared towards leisure and species conservation, including work for nightjars, dormice, red squirrels and the pearl-bordered fritillary butterfly.
