About this book

Language: French

Anjou and Touraine are two of the most beautiful historical regions in France, classified as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. In our minds, this geographical area is often associated with the castles of the Loire, wines and a mild climate. But it is also here that a stage of the Upper Cretaceous is defined: the Turonian. If the lower limit of the floor is now taken near Pueblo in the state of Colorado in the United States, the stratotype, located in France, retains all its heritage interest to the extent that it specifies the content.

This volume explains first of all the reasons which led to the nineteenth century Alcide d'Orbigny to choose the region "from Saumur to Montrichard" as a typical region of its Turonian stage. The progression of knowledge about the typical Turonian is summarized through the review of many publications. Different aspects are studied: the succession of layers consisting largely of tufa (a variety of limestone), old landscapes and palaeontological content. Turonian and Man also have a common history through the extraction of tufa as a building stone, especially for the castles of the Loire, but also in the use of underground quarries such as mushrooms farms and wineries. The heritage is finally valued through an inventory of preserved sites and collections.

The CD-ROM includes four more chapters:
