The third part in this series of photographic guides to terrestrial Heteroptera of Japan. It assembles the scientific results of 15 well known Japanese authors, each a specialist for the treated families. These comprise almost all terrestrial families recorded to date from Japan (except those treated in volume 2), namely Enicocephalidae, Tingidae, Nabidae, Reduviidae, Aradidae, Heterogastridae, Pachygronthidae, Rhyparochromidae, Geocoridae, Blissidae, Lygaeidae, Piesmatidae, Cymidae, Ninidae, Malcidae, Berytidae, Largidae, Pyrrhocoridae, Stenocephalidae, Alydidae, Rhopalidae, Coreidae, Urostylididae, Plataspidae, Cydnidae, Scutelleridae, Dinidoridae, Pentatomidae, and Acanthosomatidae. Illustrated keys are provided for all principal infraorders and 33 families known from Japan, and text keys to all families with three or more subfamilies, as well as keys to subfamilies, tribes and genera, and even several leading to species. Of the 666 species included in this volume, 489 are shown in 128 colour plates with gorgeous photos of adults in their natural environment and available immatures, most of them taken by Mikio Takai.
The high standard, completeness, comprehensiveness and clearness of the presentation make this series, and particularly this volume, an indispensable reference work for student, amateur and professional entomologists, also for those workers dealing with issues related to conservation and sustainability of environment or agricultural pest management.
