The gelechiid genus Chionodes is revised for America north of Mexico. Oxycryptis Meyrick, 1912 (type species O. attonita Meyrick) is recognized as a junior synonym of Chionodes. Chionodes attonita (Meyrick) is a new combination. One hundred eighty-seven species are recognized including 115 new species. Maculation and male and female species are illustrated; all larval hosts are noted; geographic distribution is summarized for previously described species; full label date are presented for all new species; all specimen label data is available via the internet. Fourteen taxonomic changes are proposed. Six species-groups are recognized and characterized: formosella-group, obscurusella-group, discoocellella-group, phalacrus-group, ceryx-group, and lugubrella-group. Identification keys are given for the species-groups and for the species of each species-group.
