Type Specimens of Birds in the American Museum of Natural History, Parts 1-10

About this book

This subseries of the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History. The American Museum of Natural History holds an enormous collection of type specimens of bird species as a result of either collectors depositing their collections here, or of collecting trips organised by the museum in the past.

As part of an institution's responsibility, according to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, every institute where types are deposited should "(1) ensure that all are clearly marked so that they will be unmistakably recognized; (2) take all necessary steps for their safe preservation; (3) make them accessible for study; (4) publish lists of type material in its possession or custody; and (5) so far as possible, communicate information concerning types when requested by zoologists." This series of catalogue complies with that responsibility.

Abstract: This third part of Type Specimens of Birds in the American Museum of Natural History continues the list begun by James C. Greenway, Jr., and corresponds to taxa covered in Volume 7 of Peters' Check-list of Birds of the World. In taxonomic order (according to Peters' Check-list), this section precedes Part 4, which was published earlier. Four hundred forty-two published names are discussed herein. For each taxon, the type locality and currently recognized name are given; for many, comments on taxonomic history are also provided.

The original description of each taxon has been consulted, coordinates given for type localities when possible, currently accepted names for the taxa included, and comments on taxonomic history are provided. 553 published names are treated. Types of 11 of these are not in AMNH; the type of one is not extant; and three specimens with supposed type status are shown to have no nomenclatural standing.

Peters and subsequent authors. The original description of each has been consulted unless otherwise noted, coordinates given for type localities when possible, currently accepted names for the taxa included, and comments on taxonomic history provided. Eight hundred fifty-eight names are treated, 332 of them introduced by G.M. Mathews. Types of 35 of these are not in AMNH, and 15 were not found.

Abstract: This eighth part of Type Specimens of Birds in the American Museum of Natural History includes taxa covered in volume 12 of the Check-list of Birds of the World (Paynter, 1967) except for the families Zosteropidae and Meliphagidae, which will comprise a separate part. The original description of each form has been consulted unless otherwise noted, coordinates for type localities are given when possible, currently accepted names for the taxa included, and comments on taxonomic history provided. In all, 419 names are treated, five of these being replacement names; 102 of them were introduced by G.M. Mathews. Types of 12 of these names are not in AMNH or were not found. Four paratypes are discussed, the holotypes of which were almost certainly destroyed in World War II.

In Part 9, 445 names are treated; types of 22 of these are not in AMNH or were not found.

Abstract: This tenth part of Type Specimens of Birds in the American Museum of Natural History includes taxa in the family Emberizidae in volume 13 of Peters' Check-list of Birds of the World (Paynter, 1970a). The original description of each taxon has been consulted and the currently accepted name of the taxon has been listed with reference to Dickinson (2003). In a few cases, more recent studies have been taken into account. Modern names and coordinates of type localities are given when possible and comments on taxonomic history are provided. In this part, 338 names are treated; types of 19 of these are not in AMNH or were not found.
