A new, small-format field guide to 250 of Europe's most common butterflies, with particular emphasis on those species found in northern Europe, and including all species that occur in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Arranged into 22 familty groups so that related species are found together, 'Philip's Mini Guide to Butterflies' begins with a brief introduction to butterflies, covering anatomy, behaviour and life cycles, and finishes with advice on butterfly watching. Following the introduction is a brief but helpful general description of each family group, which will help the reader identify a particular species.

Following the introduction and family descriptions are the 250 individual species accounts and accompanying illustrations. The descriptions are organized into easy-to-navigate headings that cover wingspan, flight period, distribution, plantfood and habitat. Also included is general information on appearance, behaviour or habitat that will provide additional identification information.
Also listed are species that share certain physical characteristics and which are sometimes incorrectly identified. A symbol indicates if the species does not occur in the British Isles.

Accompanying the succinct but informative text are superb, life-sized artworks, featuring leader lines to annotation that highlights key identifying characteristics of the species. In addition, an at-a-glance 'Key Identification' checkbox lists three essential physical features to look for when attempting to name a species.
