This particular volume of the Encyclopedia, Volume 8, is the third volume of Dicotyledons. It includes 21 families (Fabaceae to Lythraceae) with 172 genera and 528 species. In terms of the number of species reported from Bangladesh in this volume the family Fabaceae is the largest family consisting of 254 species and Lamiaceae with 86 species is the second largest. The following two families, Hydrangeaceae and Hydrophyllaceae are each represented in Bangladesh by one single species. This volume includes a few taxonomically important plants such as Dalbergia confertiflora Benth. var. listeri Thoth. of Fabaceae, Castanopsis castanicarpa (Roxb.) Spach and Lithocarpus acuminata (Roxb.) Rehder of Fagaceae, Litsea clarkei Prain of Lauraceae, Taxillus thelocarpa (Hook. f.) M.K. Alam of Loranthaceae and Rotala simpliciuscula (S. Kurz) Koehne of Lythraceae, which are endemic to Bangladesh. Gomphostemma salarkhaniana Khanam and Hassan of Lamiaceae is a new species described from Bangladesh, which may also be endemic to this country. This volume also includes many species which are now endangered or rare in Bangladesh.
