This is the first volume of a handbook to allow identification of all grasshoppers found in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Somalia and Ethiopia. The wealth of illustrations is designed to reduce the written text to a minimum. It is not primarily designed to be a taxonomic treatise, but comprehensive research references can be found in the bibliography. As is often the case with insect studies, specialist literature on the Acridoidea (the superfamily name for this group of insects) Is dispersed and only accessible through major libraries. This handbook attempts to bring all the information together and covers the Identification of more than 700 acridoid species found in this vast region of Africa. The coverage does not include the Eumastacoidea or bush-hoppers, for which the many papers by M. Descamps are the authority, nor the poorly known and little studied Tetrigoidea.
