Landscapes and Landforms of Colombia contains a short description of Colombia's geological evolution and present landscapes, followed by systematic descriptions of 17 geomorphosites, selected from scientific and aesthetic points of view. The large climatic and topographic diversity which characterises Colombia permits a broad variety of landscapes, including coastal features, mud volcanoes and desertic geoforms, snow covered peaks and active volcanoes, deeply incised canyons and forming subdesertic valleys and lake located up to 3 000 m above sea level. Landscapes and Landforms of Colombia reflects the intent to contribute to the knowledge of a country which has often been left apart from traditional touristic guides.

Prof Michel Hermelin conducted studies on geomorphology (evolution of Colombian landscapes, erosion and chemical weathering, distribution of Quaternary volcanic ash) in the Central and Western Cordilleras, in Cordoba and the Archipelago of San Andres and Providencia also works on Environmental Geology (mapping and threat prevention, impact of human activities on ecosystems, physical planning of urban and rural territory). He currently undertakes projects on the highlands of Antioquia, the breakdown of stability of slopes subjected to grazing, decomposition of Antioquia Batholith rocks and natural hazards Aburra Valley. He has published in many international journals such including the Bull. of Engineering Geology and the Environment, JP of Human Security and Development, Zeitschrift fur Geomorphology, Journal of the Institute of Housing INVI, Chile, and national journals including the Journal of the Academy Colombian Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences, and the Bulletin of Earth Sciences, Bulletin of Routes, EAFIT Magazine, as well as in several books.
