About this book

This concise guide is a companion to the main Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland by the same expert authors, but is in a condensed form with artwork opposite the species descriptions and lay-flat binding for ease of use in the field. It includes brief but comprehensive field descriptions of all the macro-moths in Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, and this second edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the latest advances in taxonomy. Featuring more than 1,700 superbly detailed colour artworks and covering nearly 900 species, this portable guide is an essential addition to every moth-lover's field kit.

This second edition of the concise guide reflects the many updates, refinements and improvements, as well as the major taxonomic updates, newly discovered species and new illustrations of existing species found in the third edition of Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland. The concise guide includes descriptions and illustrations for all 896 species found in the field guide, and a newly recorded species, Marigold Shark.

This is a superb book for the moth trapper. As a new "moth-er" I have found it extremely useful in identifying the moths which come to my garden. The spiral binding means it can be left open on a page without damaging the binding.

Media reviews

"The publication of the first edition of Concise Guide the to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland undoubtedly contributed significantly towards the observation, study, recording and enjoyment of larger moths. This second edition follows the key updates within the comprehensive Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland (by the same authors), including refinements, improvements, the addition of newly discovered species [...] As is to be expected from a concise guide with limited space, the species accounts lack the level of detail contained within the full Field Guide, but the crucial information on identification features and biometrics is provided. [...] This second edition, with its added features for ease of identification, should appeal to beginners to moth-recording and those with a growing interest. As with its predecessor, this edition marks a step forward in promoting the interest in and recording of moths throughout Britain and Ireland"
– Simon Breeze, British Wildlife 31(4), April 2020

"This concise field guide is an abridged form of the latest edition of the full-sized Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland by the same authors. It is designed for easy use during fieldwork and when light-trapping. The paper is water-resistant and the spiral binding allows the pages to be opened out and laid flat. [...] Overall, this is sure to prove a very useful and welcome field guide and with such an affordable price it is open to all. It can be recommended very highly and deserves to find a place in the library of every moth enthusiast."
– Mark Young, Atropos 65
