About this book

Pyrrhura Parakeets (Conures) is the most comprehensive treatise on the genus published in any language, resulting from more than 30 years experience of breeding them, plus observing them in the wild in Argentina, Brazil Colombia, Ecuador and Panama.

Rosemary Low's passionate interest in these fascinating parakeets is evident on almost every page. In the avicultural chapters, she emphasises aspects that improve their quality of life: spacious accommodation (they need to fly!), a varied diet including many foods gathered from the wild, and avoiding over-breeding for the pet trade. The chapters on conservation show her concern for their survival (11 of the approximately 30 species are of conservation concern) and describe what is being done to save them from extinction.

For the second edition, the text has been updated, especially on the conservation of individual species. The book contains 90 full-colour photos (55 of which are new). Most maps have been redrawn and are now all in colour.

Biography

Rosemary Low has kept and bred parrots since soon after she acquired her first Budgerigars when she was 12 years old. In the 50-plus years since then, she has been curator of Loro Parque, Tenerife, and Palmitos Park, Gran Canaria, and travelled extensively to observe parrots in the wild and to lecture on her favourite birds. She has a special interest in South America and its avifauna and conservation. The Pyrrhura conures are her passion and lories are her love. She keeps both in her aviaries. She has published 30 books on birds (mostly on parrots). They have been translated into German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Czech, Hungarian and Korean.
