Revision of the Indo-Pacific Labrid Fish Genus Suezichthys, with Descriptions of Four New Species

The Indo-Pacific labrid fish genus Suezichthys is closely related to Pseudolabrus and Halichoeres. It differs from Pseudolabrus in possessing the following characters: anterior preneural zygopophyses fused, slightly expanded; urohyal with postero-ventral spike; lateral-line canal tube simple. Suezichthys differs from Halichoeres in having A III,10 (versus III,11-13), cheeks scaly, and gill membranes forming a free fold across the isthmus. The genus consists of 8 species: S. aylingi n. sp. occurs in northeastern New Zealand and southeastern Australia (New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania); S. gracilis (Steindachner and Döderlein) occurs in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, New Caledonia, and southeasten Australia (S. Queensland, New South Wales); S. soelae n. sp. is described from 8 specimens trawled off the North West Shelf of Australia; S. caudovittatus (Steindachner), the type-species, is known from the Red Sea, Somalia, and Persian Gulf; S. notatus (Kamohara) is known from Japan, Hawaii, and the North West Shelf of Australia; S. cyanolaemus n. sp. is restricted to southern Western Australia; S. arquatus n. sp. occurs in northeastern New Zealand, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, Lord Howe Island, and southeastern Australia (New South Wales); and S. russelli Randall, is known from the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean.
