A very readable book about the native British trees

This book is not a conventional identification guide (though includes keys and can be used as such). It is not a textbook of trees (though it contains a lot of detailed information). It is not a coffee-table book of glossy photos to be flicked through briefly and then put down (though it has many illustrations and can be dipped into a short chapter at a time). It is a storybook to be read. It is the story of the native British trees and, what is more, it is a very personal story of the authors’ encounters with those trees – what makes them different and what makes each of them special, their place in history, in medicine or popular culture, their uses and ecology, all written in an informal and very readable style without any loss of detail or accuracy. Ros Bennett’s text is accompanied throughout by Nell’s exquisite drawings. All botanists know that a good drawing conveys more information than even the best of photographs and these are no exception; precise detail that reveals the essential characteristics to distinguish each species drawn by someone who understands trees. Whether you think you know about trees, or if you are a complete beginner, you will find something new of interest in every chapter of this very readable book.

Biography

Ros Bennett gained degrees in Botany (BSc) and Ecology (MSc) at Aberdeen University before setting out on a lifetime of surveying, teaching and publication, helping people to understand the world of plants. In the field and classroom, she has inspired amateurs, professionals and post-graduate students, and has travelled widely, helping people to discover wild places in Europe and Africa.

Nell Bennett is a designer and freelance illustrator.
